Lord Shiva with Tripund tilak and divine third eye symbol

Tripund and Third Eye

In Shivdham, objects related to Lord Shiva are crafted on the outer walls of the temple itself. These include the Tripund, Damru, Trishul, Rudraksha, and others, which reflect the sanctity of Shivdha and the presence of Lord Shiva. These not only remind devotees of Shiva but also awaken feelings of devotion and meditation within them.

Lord Shiva is considered the God of knowledge, meditation, and renunciation in Hinduism. His form holds many deep spiritual mysteries. Among these, the Tripund on his forehead and his third eye are his primary symbols, guiding us on the path of discipline, spiritual practice, and self-realization.

Importance of Tripund

The Tripund is a tilak of three horizontal lines on Lord Shiva’s forehead, made with sacred ash (vibhuti). This ash reminds us of death and the perishable nature of the body and teaches us that the soul is eternal. The Tripund signifies moving towards self-realization by letting go of ego.

The three lines of the Tripund represent:

The three gunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas).

The three worlds (Earth, Sky, Netherworld).

The three Vedas (Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda).

When Shiva devotees apply the Tripund, they express their commitment to walking on Shiva’s path and dedicating themselves to spiritual practice.

Importance of the Third Eye

Lord Shiva’s third eye, also called Trinetra, is located in the center of his forehead. It symbolizes the power to see beyond the physical eyes, perceiving truth, divine knowledge, and intuition.

According to mythology, Lord Shiva opened his third eye to burn Kamadeva (the god of desire) to ashes. This teaches us that when ego and desires increase within us, we should awaken our inner third eye to destroy these impurities.

Significance of Both Symbols

The Tripund and the third eye both represent Lord Shiva’s identity and his spiritual messages. The Tripund is an outer symbol of devotion and spiritual practice, while the third eye is an inner symbol of self-realization and intuition.

Both of these symbols inspire us to walk on the path of discipline, meditation, and truth in our lives. From these symbols of Shiva, we learn that material existence is temporary, and we should move towards self-awareness and spiritual knowledge.

Lord Shiva’s Tripund and third eye are not just religious symbols but sources of spiritual consciousness and inner strength. The Tripund and other objects crafted at Shivdham help devotees feel the presence of Shiva and guide us toward inner peace, devotion, and wisdom. If we bring these symbols of Shiva into our lives, we can truly live a calm, disciplined, and conscious life.
