In the holy cave of Maa Vaishno Devi Dham, when devotees move ahead after having the darshan of Maa Kaalratri, they are blessed with the sacred and radiant vision of Maa Mahagauri. This divine idol, about 7.1 feet in height, 5.5 feet in width, and 3.1 feet in diameter, is a wonderful symbol of purity and serenity. The entire formappears as if the coolness of the moon and the pure whiteness of jasmine flowers have descended into the cave.
On the eighth day of Navratri, Maa Durga is worshipped in her eighth form as Maa Mahagauri. Her very name reflects her divine beauty and purity – Mahagauri, meaning extremely fair, bright, and radiant. Her glow is soothing like the moon and charming to the heart. She is regarded as the goddess of peace, compassion, and gentleness.
Maa Mahagauri's idol has three eyes and four arms. She is usually adorned in a white or light green saree, symbolizing purity and simplicity. In her hands, she carries different weapons and blessings:
In her upper right hand, she holds a Trishul (trident). Her lower right hand is in Var Mudra (boon-giving posture), granting blessings and protection to devotees. Her upper left hand shows the Abhaya Mudra (fearlessness gesture), giving courage and strength. Her lower left hand carries a Damru (drum), symbol of creation and rhythm of life. Her vehicle is the bull (Vrishabh), which represents strength, righteousness, and stability.
The form of Maa Mahagauri is calm, radiant, and full of compassion. She fulfills the wishes of her devotees and removes their sufferings. She is known as the goddess of beauty and prosperity. Her divine presence removes ignorance and sins, filling the devotee's life with peace, purity, and spirituality. Her worship blesses the seeker with liberation (moksha).
The name Mahagauri signifies the ultimate form of beauty and light, spreading divine radiance across the universe. Her form reflects the gentle, compassionate, and graceful side of nature, bringing balance and completeness.
On the eighth day (Ashtami) of Navratri, Maa Mahagauri is specially worshipped. On this day, devotees wear pink-colored clothes, as it is her most beloved color. The rituals include offering jasmine flowers, rice, lamps, incense,and sacred food. Kanya Pujan (worshipping young girls) holds great importance on this day, as it is considered the best way to receive Maa Mahagauri's blessings.
Through the darshan and worship of Maa Mahagauri, devotees receive beauty, peace, and prosperity in their lives.
