Maa Vaishno Devi has been one of the supreme goddesses in the Hindu mythology, who has been worshipped for nine days to let the world know her story of victory and how she established her place, how she spread her authority among the gods and goddesses.
For centuries, her story has inspired devotees by teaching them the real purpose of faith, patience, and surrender to the divine will.
The divine origin of Maa Vaishno Devi
According to Hindu belief in the Treta yuga, evil reached its peak with the group of demons. Supreme gods and goddesses decided to create a supreme power to kill demons and maintain life on earth with righteousness and balance.
All three goddesses, Maa Laxmi, Maa Saraswati, and Maa Kali, with their combined supreme power, originated Maa Vaishno Devi on earth as a young girl named Vaishnavi, who was destined to live among humans while carrying all spiritual powers within her. From childhood, all her keen focus was towards meditation and devotion, choosing a life of simplicity and discipline.
Vaishani was born in the home of her favourite devotee, Shridhar. One day, Vaishanvi asked Shridar to do a feast for the entire village. Along with all the villagers, the tantrik named Bhairav also arrived, along with his 360 disciples, joining them.
He challenged Pandit Shridhar to provide food for him and his 360 disciples who came along with him. Shridhar became deeply stressed with Bhairanath's words as his financial situation was not sound enough so that he can provide food for so many people. But Pandit Shridhar didn’t lose hope. His strong believe on maa vaishno make helped him fulfil the challenge of Bhairavnath. Maa Vaishno, who was born as his daughter Vaishnavi on earth, reveals her true identity and instructs Shirdhar to ask Bhairavnath and his disciples to take a seat for a meal. Vaishnavi, with her divine powers, miraculously provided a meal for every single person present at the village feast.
When Shridhar was able to provide a meal for Bhairavnath and his disciples, Bhairavnath found it suspicious, realising the financial condition of Shridhar and how he had no potential for organising a feast, and it couldn’t happen without someone's help or a miracle. He also realised that the young girl, Vaishnavi, was not ordinary. To reveal Maa Vashno Devi's true identity, Bhairavnath began to follow her. The divine Maa Vaishno took help from Lord Hanuman to stop Bhairavnath from coming her way, and she moved towards the Trikuta Mountains. Maa Vaishno Devi spent 9 months performing penance inside a cave, which is today known as the Ardhakumaari.
Bhairavnath, finding out about Maa Vaishno Devi's presence, still refused to abandon his pursuit, knowing that Bhairavnath's commencement, Maa Vaishno Devi exits from the other side of the cave, and changed her appearance. When Bhairavnath's unruly behaviour did not cease even then, ultimately, near the cave of Trikuta, Maa Vaishno killed Bhairavnath. Just before his death, Bhairavnath accepted his mistakes and also asked Maa for forgiveness. With his surrenderity maa vaishno devi blessed him with a boon that any devotee coming to seek the darshan of Maa Vaishno Devi must also visit Bhairavnath; otheriwise there pilgrimage would be considered incomplete.
After this, Maa Vaishno Devi enshrined herself within the cave in the form of three Pindis (Mahakali, Mahalakshi, and Mahasaraswati).
Among so many stories, there is one more story that devotees often find to hear, which is that the Pandavas were the first to construct temples at Kol Kandoli and Bhawan to express their reverence for the Mother Goddess. Today, this temple is believed to be situated in the middle of the Trikuta hills near Katra in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Spiritual Significance of the Story
The story of Maa Vaishno Devi might sound like a mythology to many, but if we read it from our consciousness, we can figure out that it has a lot to teach us about things like:
True power lies in patience, just like Vaishnavi did.
Faith and devotion can help you overcome any obstacle, just like Shridhar’s faith.
Ego and arrogance can ultimately lead to downfall, exactly what happened with Tantrik Bhairavnath.
Forgiveness is the highest form of strength, which Maa Vaishno Devi did by forgiving Bhairavnath.
This story reminds us that life is filled with challenges that can make us like Shridhar or break us like Bhairavnath.
Maa Vaishno Devi on the land of Vrindavan
Today, after seeing the deep faith among devotees for visiting Maa Vaishno Devi at least once in a lifetime, but unable to do it due to several reasons like health, finances, age, time, Dr. JC Chaudhry invited Maa Vaishno Devi from the mountains of Trikuta to the land of Vrindavan in the Chaar Dham Temple. The Chaar Dham Temple has the combined presence of four powerful deities, i.e., Maa Vaishno Devi, Lord Shiva, Radha Krishna, and Lord Shani. The best part is that within the time of establishment of this temple, it witnessed the highest footfall in the temple of devotees just to seek the divine blessings of Maa and other divine deities. As this temple not just has Maa Vaishno Devi Temple with her divine shrine but also a replica of Vaishno Devi Cave with all the nine forms of the goddess, beginning with lord ganesha and ending with Bhairavnath.
Conclusion
The story of Maa Vaishno Devi depicts how devotees can find that strength and devotion that will help them to overcome any challenge in their lives. The journey of Maa Vaishno from an ordinary human Vaishnavi to a divine goddess Maa Vaishno Devi reflects one’s power of inner transformation.
It also tells us that, with our faith, discipline, and surrender, we too can overcome challenges and move closer to our true purpose.
And this is the reason why, even today, millions of devotees visit Vaishno Devi Katra not just to seek her blessings but to find themselves.
