Lord Shiva is represented as the creator and destroyer of the universe. Meditating on Shiva’s energy is not about ritual alone; it is about aligning with the higher state of awareness, inner balance, and transformation. If you know even a little about lord shiva, then you know that Shiva’s energy is calm yet powerful, grounding yet expansive. When we refer to meditation, Shiva is the living example of this. While many have questions, here's how you can consciously connect with the divine energy of lord shiva during meditation.
1. Create a sacred, calm space
If you want to attain Shiva-like energy, then you need to focus on setting up a few things. Like Shiva’s energy, one can tap into it by attending to the stillness. If possible, you can light a diya or incense stick to purify the environment, and sit facing north or northeast while meditating, which is traditionally believed to invite and enhance spiritual receptivity. The goal is not decoration, but simplicity, just like Shva’s ascetic nature.
2. Sit in Stillness, Like Shiva
You can see lord shiva often meditating on Kailash Parvat. Shiva meditating in complete stillness, but aware too. You too can experience this by replicating this. Sit comfortably with your spine straight, eyes closed, relaxed body, and let go of all your unnecessary thoughts from your mind. The more still your body becomes, the easier it is for your mind to settle.
3. Focus on the Breath (Prana)
Shiv is also known as a person who can control his senses, be it his emotions, thoughts, or breathing. He is the perfect example of breath and life force. You can begin to focus on your breath without trying to control it. Slowly, practice and allow the breadth to become deeper and steadier.
With every inhale you do, try to feel the awareness rising, and with every exhale, release all your stress, anxiety, and thoughts that are creating noise in your head. Breath is the bridge that connects you with spirituality by being in this physical world.
4. Chant or Mentally Repeat “Om Namah Shivaya”
Chanting the “Om Namah Shivaya” mantra helps to align your energy with the Shiva consciousness. You may chant it softly or repeat it mentally. Each word of the mantra carries a vibration that calms your nervous system and purifies thought patterns. When the mantra vibrates in harmony with your breath, it creates a rhythm that draws your intention towards calm and positivity.
5. Visualize Shiva’s Energy
It’s often said to visualise colors like gentle blue or white light at the corner of your forehead or heart. Imagine this light expanding with each breath, filling your entire being with peace and clarity. You may also visualise Shiva in deep meditation, radiating strength. This visualization helps the mind focus better in devotion and awareness.
6. Embrace Silence and Detachment
Shiva’s greatest teaching has been vairagya, which means detachment from what escapes from the outer world or noise. Just like during meditation, multiple thoughts arise. The maximum times most of us do is try to fight with our thoughts while meditating, which doesn’t work for them. What we need to do is to calmly observe our thoughts like clouds passing through the sky. Return gently to your breath or mantra. This non-attachment allows Shiva’s energy to awaken within you.
7. End with Gratitude
Before opening your eyes, take a moment to express gratitude; to Shiva, to yourself, and to the stillness you experienced. Try to carry Shiva's calmness in your daily life.
